Sci Fight Science Comedy Debate and the Science Gallery Melbourne come together as part of their wonderful exhibition MENTAL to explore this digital debate.

As the gap between what a human brain can do and what a computer can do shrinks, we must ask the question: why not combine forces?

For those of us who often forget whether or not we’ve put on pants today, maybe uploading our thoughts, memories and pants related obligations to the cloud could save us time, money, and those arrests for indecent exposure.

Already computers tell us where we’re supposed to be right now, how to get there, and whether to expect a dental exam or a pap smear. Maybe it’s not really that big a leap to go the next step and hand over the reins of our entire minds to our digital carers.

But as we increase our digital identity have we overlooked the essence of what makes us human? Can a computer ever truly replicate the complex, flawed, random and magical inner world of homo erectus? And what happens when our whole personality is accessible via the web? Is privacy soooo 20th century? And is it actually safe? We’ve got enough on our hands right now worrying about biological viruses, let alone computer viruses. They never found a vaccine for Y2K.

And we’ve given ourselves entirely over to the cloud, what is the point of us? And what if the computers agree? Join scientists and comedians as we calculate our purpose, enumerate our existence, and validate our value.
